Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a noninvasive and FDA approved treatment for depression. Seen on Dr. Oz Show, The Daily Show, and The Daily Buzz, TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. Sometimes patients are not responsive to either medications or therapy, so TMS therapy is an alternative option that can lessen symptoms of depression. Our psychiatrist, Dr. Deepti Bhasin, is the only provider in our area that uses this type of treatment.
During a TMS procedure, the patient will sit in a comfortable chair and an electromagnetic coil is placed on the patient’s head. Magnetic pulses will stimulate nerve cells that control mood. When a person is suffering from depression, certain parts of the brain have decreased activity and these magnetic pulses try to stimulate these nerve cells for happier moods.
After your first treatment, your psychiatrist will evaluate whether or not you need additional TMS sessions. If rTMS, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, is needed and is successful, depression symptoms may improve or go away. If depression symptoms have lasted several years, have included psychotic symptoms, or if electroconvulsive therapy hasn’t worked for you in the past, rTMS may not work.
TMS may result in some side effects such as:
In some rare cases, patients have had side effects including seizures, mania, and hearing loss if there is not proper ear protection.
It is important to let your doctor know if you’re pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant, if you have any metal or implanted medical devices, any medications you’re taking, if you have a history of seizures, mental health disorders, brain damage, frequent or severe headaches, and any other medical conditions before having TMS treatment.
